USING SIGNAL PHRASES TO INTEGRATE QUOTATIONS INTO YOUR WRITING Effective use of quotations requires that you include quotations in your paper in a way that allows the reader to understand the relevance of the quoted material to your own argument.

When you quote someone or paraphrase something you’ve read, you need to attribute the idea or quote to the person who said it. The way you do that is by using a signal phrase. Think of signal phrases as academic alternatives to “said.” These expressions, which usually occur in the parts of sentences that come just before quotes and paraphrases, are called signal phrases (or, in some cases, lead-in phrases). Often, signal phrases can be distinguished by the presence of a verb like "indicate" or "argue" that references what the author is doing in the original source.
